!1: Best Buy A little girl lifted her hands to the nighttime sky as she leaned slightly outside her bedroom window. The waves were churning and a sudden breeze rustled through her hair and the beautiful pear blossoms just below her window. Magical lions started to climb out of the sea, shaking their manes to rid themselves of the salt water. "They caper and slap, snarl and purr. They nuzzle and nip and lazily lick each other's fur." A lion lifted his eyes to the window and Rose waved her hand, asking him to come to her. Whoosh! In a second he was next to her and she hugged him close.

Past the curtains, through the window and over the pear blossoms they rise to the star speckled sky to begin an adventure. They quickly began their journey by passing Pegasus, Pisces and "suns like Chinese lanterns." Rose held on tight as they continued their "race across the night." They moved through the galaxy, but found themselves sucked up into a black hole and whirled along with a unicorn. Soon it would be time to head back because little children need to sleep.

This is a very charming, soothing tale that would make a perfect bedtime story. The poetic lilt and the beautiful, swirling artwork combine to make a lightly hypnotic tale that will lull a little one to sleep. The color scheme is similar to Van Gogh's "Starry Night" and swirls beautifully through the pages. This is a beautiful enchanted trip through the nighttime skies that you're going to love! on Sale!

In the summer of 1940 the Germans prepared to launch Operation Sea Lion, the invasion of England. The British, barely recovered from Dunkirk, rallied their defenses.

Both sides operated in great secrecy and, because the invasion never took place, the dramatic preparations for what would have been one of the watershed battles of history faded from memory.

Not, however, before Peter Fleming rescued this fascinating story from military archives and the recollections of survivors who were involved.

!1: Best Buy Ian Fleming's brother Peter wrote this charming account of German amphibious invasion plans after Dunkirk, and Britain's plans to repel any invasion they might try. Fleming was peripherally involved in these plans, having been assigned during the dangerous post-Dunkirk period to preparing to wage guerrilla warfare behind enemy lines if the Boche took the beaches and moved inland, but this book is not a personal account but a broad history of the political, military, and psychological factors that went into invasion preparations on both sides, and the final German decision to back off.

Contrary to other reviews, this is not a book about the Battle of Britain. In Fleming's chapter on the Battle of Britain, he notes that the subject is covered extensively elsewhere and he only gives it attention as it relates to the Germans' plans for what they'd do after they won that battle, and on why they decided not to invade. It's more about what might have happened than about what did happen.

Fleming's favorite themes are the indomitability of the English mood at the time (which he amusedly puts down as much to cultural momentum as to courage) and Hitler's fatal misjudgment of it. He makes a convincing case that Hitler put off invading because he thought, wildly incorrectly, that the British were terrified and on the verge of making terms. He also persuasively posits that it was ironically good for the Reich that Hitler hesitated to implement Operation Sea Lion, because the invasion plan was doomed to fail. But Fleming's theses aside, this book is best read for his evocative and witty description of Britain's national mood between Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain -- a mood he underlines with illustrations drawn from the cartoons in contemporary Punch magazines. You can't help but respect the British and envy their courage after reading this entertaining book. on Sale!

±1±: Best Buy My great grandparents, whom I didn't see often, sent me this book a few years after it was first published. I was about 6 & was instantly in love with this book. It was very different from the others I'd read. The illustrations are romantic fantasy with a gorgeous depth of color & detail; their beauty captivated me, I would sit & delve into each one, getting lost in them. The story was simple & true, faithful to his love for Blue the butterfly, despite the obvious differences in them, Lion searches for his Blue & is rewarded for his faithfulness in the end. When I was a child & feeling alone or missing my friend who I loved who would move from across the country to an Army base to home again every other year, I went to this book for solace. It has stayed with me through the years & when I lost that book in a house fire, I cried. Years later when I had my own son, I found another copy, even though I had to pay it was worth it. I've read this to my son a number of times & he too loves the illustrations & time will tell if the message sticks with him too.
I highly recommend this book for anyone with small children, it's beauty in both concept & art is outstanding. on Sale!

"Belongs on the shelf of classics about surviving degradation with dignity and even humor." Time
In March 1985, Terry Anderson was swept up in the violent conflict of a turbulent era. At the mercy of Shiite captors for nearly seven years, he lived in chains, wondering fearfully if each day would be his last. But his spirit soared beyond captivity, and he never gave up. Nor did those who loved him. And now, a free man again, he tells the harrowing and poignant story of a hostage's survival and final triumph.

±1±: Best Buy I do not want this to sound insensitive, but the one thing I kept thinking as I was reading this book is why was he there? The U.S. government was telling U.S. citizens to leave, the Lebanese government did not care, his employer wanted him to leave, and there were increasing hostage incidents. The book his the story of his capture and the seven years he spent as a captive of this militant group. He does a good job in describing the locations he was in, the people that were his captors, and the other persons that he was with. I thought the most interesting parts of the book detailed his conversations with some of his captors and their views on the situation.

The book is a very interesting view of what happened to the author. The details are rich and he does a good job of painting the scenes for us. He also did a good job of explaining the depression of being a captive and what it is like to loss seven years of your life, although I do not think any author could truly express the emotional pain that he must have gone through. If you are interested in this part of the world or this story, this is a great book. It is also interesting given the current climate in the Middle East to read about what was happening 20 years ago. on Sale!
